Tips on criminal law in Spokane

Even the best-natured police officers are trained to be on their guard for dangerous or suspicious people. Joking with the police about your gun, your drugs, or a murder will not make them laugh. It will get you in a lot of trouble.

Being angry, derogatory or insulting towards a police officer tries his or her patience. It may also cause him or her to suspect there is information you do not want to reveal.

Keep your hands when you are stopped by the police and, if possible, keep them visible to the officer. Police keep careful watch of your hands to be sure you will not suddenly grab for a weapon--either your own or theirs.

Telling an officer that he or she is wrong about the law or that you are going to file a complaint with his or her superior is not endearing. Police are extremely knowledgeable about the law and do not like it when they are treated with condescension.

Ultimately, if you are approached or detained by the police for any reason, even if you are just the passenger in a vehicle that has been stopped, one of the best things to do is not to say anything. You may answer polite or brief inquiries as to your name, address, and basic information, but the less you reveal the better.
